You Can Count on Uber This New Year’s Eve

Happy holidays, DC! Now even though we’ve only been launched for a few weeks, we already know that you’re a city that works hard and plays hard. No doubt, DC will partying hard on New Year’s Eve—and if we have anything to do with it you’ll party in style, too.

Throughout the past few weeks we’ve been cranking away to make sure we can help make your NYE amazing. You can count on us this NYE — we’ll have WAY more cars on the road than ever before and FREE vitaminwater® to help you recover from your night out (more on that in a bit). But we’re also expecting a lot of you to want an Uber at the same time on NYE…

New Year’s Eve is what we call a *surge event* at Uber. This means we expect to see a massive demand spike and a supply shortage at the same time. During these events like NYE or Halloween there is a run on private cars in most cities and in order to ensure there are enough cars on the system (read: aka an Uber experience), we’ll be enabling surge pricing on New Year’s in a similar fashion to Halloween 2011 (in other Uber cities). This means that rates on New Year’s Eve will likely increase during peak times of demand BUT when demand subsides or more supply becomes available, rates will automatically drop and you will ALWAYS know if there is a price increase before you request an Uber. In the past, other cities have seen an average price multiplier around 1.5x your typical fare.

To lessen the pain (and your January 1st hangover), we’ve partnered with vitaminwater® to do NYE right. We’re putting about 1,000 bottles of this hydrating miracle worker into DC Ubers throughout the evening. And to sweeten the deal, if you snag one of these vitaminwater® bottles you’ll also get a unique promo code for $5 off your next Uber ride in 2012. It’s the least we can do to say thank you for ringing in the new year with us.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns you can reach us at supportDC@uber.com.

Happy New Year, DC! Go party hard, and in style.
