Don’t treat on Uber. #UberDCLove from @BallardCT.
Tonight is Oscar’s night, and even if you aren’t on the real red carpet we’re here to help you ride like a Hollywood star all year long.
Here’s the deal: for everyone who follows @Uber_DC on Twitter and correctly guesses the Best Picture Oscar winner (using the #UberOscars hashtag), we’ll give you $10 off one Uber DC ride between now and Thursday, March 1.
We’ll be watching out for your guesses! It’s time to rock the (virtual) red carpet and do Oscar’s the Uber way.
We’re kicking off a new tradition here on the Uber DC blog—Uber DC Partner Stories! We’re excited to feature some quick Q&As with Uber partners so that you can get a glimpse of the story behind these awesome folks. Not to mention you get a look at who they really are, when they’re not just making you look good. ;-)
Our first Partner Story comes from Saqib, one of our first partners here in DC. If you have questions you want to ask for our next Partner Story, let us know on Twitter or by email at supportDC@uber.com.
Thanks for coming in today, Saqib! Let’s get started with just the basics. Where are you from? What’s your story?
Well, I was born in Pakistan, migrated to the United States in the early 90’s, and been living here since then. Always been in DC.
What’s your favorite spot in DC?
I would say Adams-Morgan. I spent a lot of time there when I was single. (Laughs)
What got you started driving?
I just wanted to try something new. I love meeting new people, and this was the perfect job for it. I’ve been in love with it every since I started doing it. I have different trades up my sleeves, but this is my favorite one.
What’s your favorite thing about Uber? You’ve been with us since almost the very beginning here in DC.
Every single thing about Uber is just great. As a driver and an independent contractor, there’s nothing about Uber that I can think of which is not good. It works in the favor for the driver from the beginning to the end. It supplements our income. You come across a lot of these people who instead of sitting somewhere wasting the day away, now get to meet nice people and make a little bit extra money. It’s just a win-win situation all the way around.
How has your business changed since you started working with Uber?
Well I’m an independent contractor so I was working with 20 different companies. Ever since I was introduced to Uber, my life has calmed down, I’m not dealing with 30 different people with attitudes, I’m dealing with one company—which is Uber—and I’ve got to say it’s probably one of the best companies I’ve ever dealt with in the business… except my own. (Laughs)
Who’s the coolest person you’ve driven (outside of Uber!)?
I’ve driven a couple of cool people. I’ve driven Mr. Alec Baldwin, I drove T.O. once… I met Mr. Al Gore through one of my clients when he was Vice President. So that was a moment, we were visiting the Vice President’s House. That’s a good memory, he was a very nice guy. Believe it or not they all have different personalities, but some of the coolest people you come across are the middle-class people, it’s just amazing how down to earth and happy a person can be without having all that stress and fame.
What is your dream road trip? If you could take a road trip anywhere, where would you want to go?
Personally? I’d love to take the kids around the country. Just traveling the country… get a big van or bus, and just put the family in there and just drive around going to see different places. And of course whenever we’re not driving we’ll pull up the Uber app and request a driver!
What do you do for fun when you’re not on the road?
These days, for the last five years, it’s spending time with my kids. It’s all about them. That’s something I look forward to coming home to. It’s just wonderful. And before that I used to ride motorcycles, so getting together with the boys early in the morning, going out in the country somewhere not knowing where we’re going. And go pick a spot, hanging out get some breakfast, coming back. So that was a hobby. But besides that, just every day loving the family and my kids.
Thanks so much for your time, Saqib! We’re excited to have you working with Uber here in DC.

President’s Day is almost over, and the UBERcade has gone home for the night, but we’ve got a fantastic video recap! Check it out, below.
Admit it, you’ve dreamed about riding in the Presidential motorcade at least once. Now that we’re in DC, we’re dedicated to bringing you as much of that Presidential experience as we can, every time you ride.
This Monday, President’s Day, we’re stepping up our game.
Monday is your chance to feel just as baller as Barack, rolling around town in your very own Uber motorcade: the UBERcade!
Everyone who requests an Uber this Monday will get a convenient and classy ride, like always. But a few lucky riders may get a ride in the UBERcade, featuring three Uber Secret Service agents and two Suburbans flanking a sleek black town car. We can’t clear traffic, and we may not have tear gas, bulletproof armor, or a backup oxygen system in the trunk like B.O. does, but we guarantee that this Monday you’re going to turn some heads as you roll through town in your UBERcade.
* Note: this motorcade does not come with sirens. ;-)
UPDATE: Bonus! All rides in the #UBERcade today are FREE. Get riding!
This Valentine’s Day we asked for your best and worst pickup lines and boy did you guys deliver. Below are a few of our favorites—starting with @AndrewJGibbons, our top pick and the winner of a free Uber ride!

With lots of Uber love,

The Uber DC office is celebrating a birthday this week and we want you to celebrate with us!
Alex, everyone’s favorite Uber DC community manager, turns another year older on Thursday, February 9th. To celebrate, we made a special promo code that gives any new Uber rider $10 off their first ride.
Promo code: HAPPYBDAYALEX
But there’s more! Alex loves Twitter, but he wants more @Uber_DC Twitter friends. If @Uber_DC passes 2,000 followers by Thursday, we’ll give anyone $5 off one ride that day. Spread the word because we’re spreading the birthday love! Tweet using the #happybdayalex hashtag.
You’ve got two days! Tell your friends, go follow @Uber_DC, and wish Alex a very Uber birthday. :)
